Embracing the individuality in people
At To Know Me, reaching out towards the individual is at the heart of everything we do.
It is a vision which reflects a person’s right to be treated as an individual, whatever their circumstances.
Imagine waking up tomorrow morning unable to care for your daily needs; relying on others to do the simplest things for you; struggling to remember people, places, names; feeling your life experiences slip away; and being unable to communicate effectively with those who you now rely on for your care.
As the creator of the book and concept, I have spent almost all of my working life, so far, in the care and support of people for whom traditional communication is complicated. When my own Mum was diagnosed with Dementia, and subsequently went to live in a care home, I began wondering how I could use my experiences to help those caring for her needs to understand more about her life and spirit. This led me to the creation of this book.
I hail from the North of England, but have spent the majority of my adult life in Kent. I have a husband, three wonderful sons and a beloved dog.
My philosophy is simple: ‘If we know more about the person behind the condition, we can care more effectively and sensitively to their needs.’
